National Institute of Education (NIE)
The National Institute of Education (NIE) is the apex institution for curriculum development, teacher education, and educational reform in Sri Lanka. Established in 1986 under the Act of Parliament No. 28 of 1985, NIE is responsible for planning and programming general education for primary, secondary, and post-secondary levels across the country.
NIE leads the transformation of Sri Lanka’s education system through evidence-based research, curriculum innovation, and professional development. Its core mandate includes designing curricula, developing teaching materials, training educators, and implementing educational reforms to meet the evolving demands of the 21st century.
The institute is guided by a strong vision to develop a future-ready, skilled human capital through inclusive, student-centered learning approaches. NIE promotes educational equity, cultural diversity, digital integration, and global competitiveness. It works in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the National Evaluation Council (NEC), and the Department of Examinations (DoE).

Channel NIE
Channel NIE is one of Sri Lanka’s leading digital educational platforms, operated under the guidance of the National Institute of Education (NIE). Established on 25th September 2019, Channel NIE was created with a mission to bridge educational gaps and deliver inclusive, curriculum-aligned learning opportunities to all Sri Lankan learners across all provinces, communities, and economic backgrounds.
We provide free, accessible educational content through popular digital platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and national television, making learning engaging, flexible, and effective.
