The National Institute of Education (NIE) has been involved in educational media production since its establishment. Initially, it started as an audio-visual unit with the objective of providing supplementary educational materials. Over time, it developed into a fully-fledged media division with the support of organizations like JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency). In the early 1980s, JICA assisted in equipping the division with essential resources and training. Later, UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) also contributed to its development.
By combining the efforts of NIE’s academic and media professionals, the institute expanded its focus into video content production for educational purposes. In addition, it collaborated with institutions such as the German Cultural Institute, SLTTI (Sri Lanka Television Training Institute), and SLRC (Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation) to further enhance capacity.
To align with national information goals, the NIE participated in NISACC (National Information Strategy and Coordination Committee) and Video Consultative Committees, helping coordinate educational video content across the country.
Various formats such as CDs and DVDs were produced to make educational content accessible to schools. These resources supported curricula in multiple subjects like science, language, civics, and environmental studies.
From as early as 1987, the institute formally began educational video productions. By 1993, these productions were aligned with the curriculum and subject-specific content for classroom use. In 1987, the media unit was officially designated as the Educational Media Division. Over the years, programs were enhanced with support from local and international experts.
